How will you care for your pond while you're traveling? It's important to set everything up before you go. Here are the essentials for a worry-free trip.
Before You Go
Your Pre-Travel Pond Checklist
Circulation
Let the pump keep running while you're gone to assist with oxygenation and circulation. Stagnant ponds get gross fast.
Filters
Clean all filters, flush canister filters if you have one, and remove any dead plants before you leave.
Predators
If you've had any trouble with heron or other predators, set up a net over the pond before you leave.
Feeding the Fish
Put in some slow-release fish food — consistency is what matters most for their feeding schedule. If a person is feeding them, give them a measuring cup with the correct amount and tell them to stick to it. Even if the fish act like they're starving, don't feed them more (they lie).
Pump Safety
Install a pump safety switch — a small device that shuts off your pump if the water gets too low, so it won't burn out. If a neighbor can check in, ask them to simply listen for any odd sounds from the pump.
Bacteria
Put in an autodoser to keep beneficial bacteria going into the pond consistently, or add enough by hand to cover the time you'll be away. Just be sure you're using plain bacteria, not a blend that could overdose the pond.
Water Level
If you have a house sitter, ask them to keep an eye on the water level in case a leak develops — and leave a dechlorinator on hand in case they need to top it off.
Of course, we can just do it for you. Call and let us know when you're heading out of town, and we'll take care of the pond and the fish while you're away.
